In Finland the sauna isn’t the luxury as it is in North America but an everyday custom enjoyed by people of all walks of life. As the filmmakers explore the practicalities and ritual of the Finnish sauna, they reveal that for many people the sauna opens hearts and minds as well as pores. Visiting public bath houses and outrageously inventive home-made saunas, the guys inside talk about their life experiences, their ambitions and failings, their secrets and fears . . . stories flowing as well as perspiration. The result is a documentary which looks into a unique, private side of Finnish culture as well as an insight into the male psyche that’s universal. Truly a soulful little film and was the first Finnish documentary considered for an American Academy Award.
